Free Adriatic Adventure Itinerary

The hardest part about planning a trip is knowing how to start. You need to know where you are going to start budgeting, but you need an idea about your budget to know how long to plan for. Plus, how do you plan a route? How do you narrow down activities? How much time do you need!

These questions can send your planning in circles. Let me help with a Free Itinerary of my Adriatic Adventure.

This 6 week (42 day) adventure took on 7 countries including England, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Between exploring castles in England, relaxing on a cruise in the Adriatic, hiking a mountain in Montenegro, cooking class in Greece, dancing in Spain, and surfing in Portugal, this trip had a little bit of everything.

Well you may not want to follow our itinerary exactly, this outline can give you a good idea of how to pace your trip and some recommended activities for each location.

Pacing

We found that 4 days in each location was a good pace for us.

  1. Day 1 is a day of travel, settling into a new accommodation, laundry, blogging, and chats with family. We usually got some groceries and did some research on our new location. For a trip as long as this one, a leisure day was a good way to make sure we were caught up on sleep and were not going to get sick or burnt out from doing too much (especially since on Days 2 - 4 we averaged about 26,000 steps a day).

  2. Day 2 usually started with a walking tour or hop on hop off tour of the area. This helped us get our bearings and introduced us to the history and significance of where we were. Plus, the guides were usually quite passionate about the area so they made a great resource for recommending how best to spend our time.

  3. Day 3 and 4 were spent exploring to our hearts content. Sometimes we booked tours that went outside the city and other times we just wandered and soaked up the moment.

If you are someone who likes to take it slow and really get a feel for the culture and area, then add in a few more days to really get to know the local hot spots. If you are short on time, a city break can be done in 3 days by combining day 1 and 2 together. However, I would not recommend doing this back to back for long as you risk burn out.

Remember why you are travelling! It can be tempting to try and squeeze in as much as possible, but the more you try to do, the less you will experience in each place. So all in all, I recommend dividing the time you have by 3 or 4 to figure out how many places or areas you can fit into the time you have.

Activities

It can be very tempting when deciding what activities to plan for your trip, to try and squeeze in as many things as possible. You take a look at a Top 10 Things to do in _____ list and want to do it all! FOMO is a thing and it can definitely add to the stress of planning.

Remember that wandering a city without a plan can be a wonderful thing. I mean your in a new, exciting place. Trust me. You won’t get bored. I usually make a list of things that I would like to see or have found on a Blogger’s must do list. Sometimes I look up tour companies in the area and see what locations are common.

However, unless it is something you HAVE to do, I wouldn’t book it ahead of time. For example, on this trip we wish we had booked the Turtle Spotting in Zakynthos ahead of time because we knew it was something we had to do and ended up struggling to find someone free. However, in Madrid it ended up being World Pride and so it became a party and go where the people are type weekend.

In other words:

  • if it is an absolute MUST do activity

  • if there is a limited number of spots

  • if there is a good chance it will be booked up

  • or if you found a great deal online

then of course secure your spot!

Otherwise, I suggest waiting until you get to the location to see what’s happening and where the local tour guides suggest spending your time.
