Underrated SEO Strategies: Custom 404 Error Pages in Squarespace

Driving traffic to my site is so easy….. said no one ever! You work hard for each and every visitor you get to your site. So why would you want to give one away?

A 404 Error Page is the page that viewers are directed to when they try to get to a page on your site that doesn’t exist. This can happen for a few reasons:

customize your 404 page tutorial, person typing on laptop
  • They have typed your URL incorrectly

  • You have gotten rid of the page they are trying to find

  • They were provided with an incorrect URL

These call all happen quite easily. You don’t want to be losing a visitor because of a simple error. Plus, if the visitor sees this page and then immediately clicks backwards, this is going to increase your bounce rate which could harm your SEO.

Creating a custom 404 Error Page is super simple and can help your visitors get to where they want to go on your site. In this video, I show you how to create a custom 404 Error Page in Squarespace and provide some tips on what you should include.

Step 1: Design Your Page

Your first step is to design the page itself. Add a blank page to the Not Linked Section in Squarespace. Make sure to hide this page from Search Results. To help your visitors find what they were looking for, I recommend including a search bar and several popular links.

Step 2: Set the Page as the 404 Error Page

To set this page to be your 404 Error Page, go to Design > 404 Page and select your custom page from the dropdown.

And…. you’re done! How simple was that! Now you wont be losing any visitors due to a URL error.
