5 Ways to Get Noticed as a Travel Photographer (Part 3/5)

In an era where everyone with a phone and a backpack can take photos of their travels and post them online, it can be very difficult to stand out as a Travel Photographer. This video series will go into 5 ways to get noticed and stand out from the crowd.

In part three I discuss why follow for follow does not work and what to do instead.

So far we have discussed finding a niche, developing and ideal client avatar, and picking a marketing strategy. Your next step centres around a common strategy I see Travel Photographer using; follow for follow.

Travel Photographers love to use follow for follow on Instagram because it allows their number of followers to quickly increase. The thought process is that by having a large following you’re going to get noticed by the right people and therefore be able to find more clients.

There are a couple problems with this line of thinking:

  1. Most followers you get from a follow for follow will unfollow you within a short amount of time

  2. These followers will probably not engage with your profile again besides the random like on a photo.

  3. These followers are not ideal clients but other photographers which means they will probably not convert from a follower to a client

In other words, it is important to remember that you are on Instagram to get noticed by ideal clients. It is a marketing tool! You can have 500, 000+ followers, but if most of them are not your ideal client, then you are not going to see an increase in business.

I am not saying that you shouldn’t follow other photographers. The main idea is that you want quality over quantity. Focus on building a following that contributes to the community on your feed and enjoys the quality of your profile so that you can build your numbers with the right people and see the increase where you really want it; the number of clients.

I am currently taking a course on using Instagram as a Marketing tool myself called Instragram with Intention by Hilary Rushford. It has already made a huge difference in how I see Instagram and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the course has in store.
